    New manager appointed
Tranmere Rovers have appointed Darrell Clarke as the club’s new manager.

Pete wild

Ahh well..

Wouldn’t surprise me. He’ll have bills to pay and can’t wait forever to see if Palios gives him another deal. Theyll be jobs out there he’ll be interested in.

He can claim he got the job done but it was partly down to the failure of other teams, on the final day especially. I’m not convinced Andy Crosby couldn’t have done better.

He didn’t convince me he was a Tranmere manager and I’m sure we could do better.

I’m sorry he didn’t do better as if he’d impressed he’d be sorting out the contract renewals. and sourcing new players. The new manager, whoever he is, will have to rely on Parky.

I'm not sure would agree with you regarding Andy Crosby, BBTC. Much as I wanted Andy to succeed, he seemed to be running out of ideas on how to change things. Those ideas that he did have this year were bizarre, like the striker-free formation he opted for in the thrashing at Notts.

My impression was that Pete Wild hadn't grasped the extent of the task at Rovers. He seemed to have looked at the squad and felt with that calibre of players, we should have enough to stay up. He did identify the fitness issue and by the end of his time in charge, players stamina had improved. Comparatively for 2026; Crosby got us 6 points from 12 games, whereas Wild managed a marginal improvement to 6 from 10. Enough to keep us up and allegedly earn himself a bonus for doing so.

We do need a new manager in place fairly promptly to start taking the decisions for next season

I got the impression from his interviews that, having seen first hand the shitshow behind the scenes, he didn't want the job. As has been commented above he wasn't a good fit, but the fact a manager with such a limited CV was not interested in the role says a lot about the current situation.

He did perform a valuable service in describing some of the off the field problems. He probably felt emboldened to discuss such matters as he knew he wouldn't be here long term.

I tend to agree with BBTC that we stayed up because of the early season form under Crosby, and the ineptitude of the teams around us, as opposed to any impact from Wild.

Yes, our points per game average was fractionally better under Wild than in Crosby's final eleven games, but his overall record was on a par with some of our poorest ever managers (Dawes, Barnes). He did not give the players any discernible boost in confidence, and he was negative and limited tactically.

Definitely the right decision to part ways.

No argument from me that if Crosby had maintained the form of the first half of the season into 2026 we'd have stayed up comfortably and no need to change manager. Not totally at fault for what happened this year, it was apparently Palios who blocked signing a new keeper leading to the restrictions on loanees. However the consensus on here was that a change was needed, probably sooner than when the Chair dispensed with his services.

Wild was probably the best option available under the circumstances. He did just enough to keep us up. He'd only signed to the end of the season, so unclear if Palios didn't make him an offer to continue or he was offered the chance and declined. Are there managers who are a better fit for Tranmere out there, undoubtedly yes, but will they join us? From the opposite end of the spectrum, some suggestion elsewhere that the potential takeover consortium might appoint the Cobh Ramblers coach as next our boss. No idea of the accuracy of that claim, but it would be a Rob Edwards 2 scenario and that didn't end well.

When asked about Wild’s prospects after the Grimsby game, Palios sounded even cooler on the idea than Wild himself had been minutes earlier! He largely deflected it, basically just saying that Wild was available when we needed someone, then started going on about the importance of having Tranmere people in and around the club.

Whether that goes some way to explaining why Ryan Lowe is 7/5 favourite with the bookies for the job, who knows. But those two interviews alone strongly suggested to me that Wild wouldn’t be the next permanent manager, and that that probably suits both parties.

I think it’d have been an awkward fit anyway, although, given the chance, I’m sure he’d have at least been able to build a team and introduce a way of playing that would’ve improved on the last two seasons. He is, after all, a manager by trade (and a fairly respectable one too), whereas four of our prior six permanent managers - Jacko, Dawes, Adkins and Crosby - were actually first recruited by the club to do a different job!

Just seen it only a week afterwards nothing surprises me about that really poor

The statement refers to the process of appointing a new manager. I had hoped that process would be overseen by new owners, but that seems unlikely now. If the current ownership are directing the recruitment of manager and players, I will be concerned.

Well it won’t be an internal appointment for once, unless it’s Parky or the tea lady!

Perhaps surprisingly, MP has only appointed three permanent managers from outside the club during his tenure - Brabin, Mellon and Hill.
EDIT: sorry, four - forgot about Adams. But even so..

I find Palios appointing a new manager strange, if the talked about sale is going ahead, I would have thought the new owners, would have wanted to appoint there own man in charge, unless they are in contact with Mark and talking about the manager they want.

Makes you wonder if the sale has gone off or something if mark is doing his usual

We are just guessing at this point but I think MP will still have his fingers in pies when the takeover is done but he’s made that no secret anyway.
