Rovers travel to South Wales on Tuesday night to take on bottom club Newport, desperate for some kind of result. Having lost against Crewe on Saturday after a promising start, Rovers find themselves in 19th position, just 10 points ahead of The Exiles and if Newport win this one which is highly likely given out current form, the gap between us and bottom could be just 7 points depending on other results.

Newport have struggled all season and find themselves bottom of the league with only six wins this season. However, they have picked up points over the last few games with an impressive 3-1 win against Salford and a recent goalless draw against Fleetwood. They have also lost games to Swindon, MK Dons and Cambridge.

Our recent record against Newport has been very good. Earlier this season we shared the points in a 1-1 draw, beat them 4-1 at their ground at the end of last season and enjoyed some 2-1 victories prior. The last time they beat us was in March 2023 going down 3-1 at Prenton Park.

Rovers are in freefall and have lost the last 9 out of 10 games. I think AC will start the way he started against Crewe providing all players are available. We did have a decent first half but crucially we have to perform for 90 minutes.

It's a difficult one to call but I just hope we can come away with some points.
A loss really would be unthinkable and surely Crosby's tenture would come to an end.

It seems a long time ago when we romped to a 4-1 win on the last day of last season including an excellent delivery from Hawkes headed in by Davison.

Newport are managed by the former Leicester premier league winning left back Christian Fuchs and front man Baker-Richardson can be a handful.

Crosby will I suspect play a similar system to yesterday and hope that we defend better and that Newport aren’t as decent in attack as Crewe were. Any changes will be limited. Plant was holding his hamstring when he came off so Norman may come in at the place where he played the best football of his career. I can’t see any of the other players who came on yesterday (Brough, Dickov or Kenneh), getting a start unless someone is injured. If Newport are more physical than Crewe then Brough may come in for McGowan as he has some extra height.

Prediction : a draw which may just about keep Crosby in a job. A defeat doesn’t bare thinking about.

I think the bottom four have relegation between them. Harrogate and Barrow are going at 37-38 rate currently. Our goal difference means a win beats that.
We don't need much and it doesn't matter when we get it, but it would be nice sooner!!!

Harrogate have got 9 points in there last 5 games so there's every chance they get more points than that

Better to look at the whole season thus far, I started to checking these projections weeks ago and they haven't changed. We got 6 from 9 at Xmas, probably due to weak opponents. Newport and Gate to come

Probably best not to look at the whole season, given that Harrogate signed half a squad in January and have several players returning from long term injury.

They are one of four and there are two others near us. We signed plenty also. It's a numbers game and trends never go in a straight line

100% they signed nine in january (they always sign well in January) and more importantly as you say they have several players back from long term injuries. They won't be going down and will get to 43 points if their current form continues. It is in all likelihood between Newport, Crawley and Barrow with us an unlikely but certainly possible addition to that list if we carry on as we are.

Recent form is a lot more relevant to form several months ago
Agreed but you can't cherry pick to prove what you want. Form table has us above Crawley with Barrow just above. Both would need to improve significantly and us continue to pick up very little.
It's a snails race and we have a chunk of a lead

We are 8 points above relegation with over 30 points to play for. If Newport beat us on Tuesday they will only be 7 points behind us and they are bottom! Not sure how you can be so confident when as highlighted above, we've gained 3 points from a possible 30 and seem to be making the same mistakes every week.

In comparison, over ten games.

  • Newport - 8 points
  • Harrogate - 9 points
  • Barrow - 3 points
  • Crawley - 9 points
  • Bristol Rovers - 10 points
If this continues for another 10 it wont take long for these teams to overtake us and we will be left with Barrow who are as hopeless as us at the bottom.

If. I never said I was confident. In all probability we will pick up a few more than recently and at least two won't hit far better form. Our run over ten maybe awful but all those named bar one are running at sub 46.
it's the same when we won a few, some thought we had the play offs in sight. We've been bottom third all season and even now haven't slipped much. We've had one shocker recently and one easy win, the rest were poor results but with redeeming features.
Contrary to convenient beliefs this league has a big variance in quality, Tuesday won't be quality and will be revealing. Actually think the bottom six would struggle to get in the play offs in National league

Currently we are available at 100-1 to go down, pessimists could secure a season ticket and some for a fiver!!!
