Tranmere 0-1 Oldham |
6 February 2010 | Written by Paul Harper |
Tranmere
failed to build on an impressive point earned at Charlton last weekend
after they were beaten 1-0 in a relegation six-pointer against Oldham
Athletic at Prenton Park.
Rovers saw one change to the starting
line-up with Zoumana Bakayogo missing out through suspension. Aaron
Cresswell replaced the French full back while new loan signing Marvin
Sordell had to make do with a place on the substitutes' bench. The
Latics lined up with former Tranmere forward Jason Price making his
debut following his transfer from Millwall.
The game began is a
scrappy fashion, with the ball pinballing about in midfield with
neither side being able to control it long enough to string any
possession together. The first chance fell to the visitors with Dean
Furman firing a deflected shot from 20 yards which was well dealt with
by Rovers goalkeeper Luke Daniels.
Oldham took the lead on 40
minutes via a corner which was won after Ian Goodison deflected another
long range effort from going goalbound. The corner was whipped in and
Pawel Abbott rose the highest ahead of the Rovers defence to turn the
ball home into the bottom corner of the net.
Moments later,
Abbott wasted a great chance to double the Latics' lead as the ball
fell to him 10 yards out, but he struggled to adjust his feet and he
fired an effort high and not so handsome as the Tranmere defence began
to look fragile.
Fog fell on Prenton Park at the beginning of
the second half, viewing the other end of the ground from my seat in
the Kop became very difficult. I'm told Luke Daniels made a great save
from a Danny Whittaker header but in truth I couldn't see it!
Sordell
came on for his Tranmere debut replacing Terry Gornell after 55 minutes
and the young striker showed some neat touches as he tried to help his
new team back to level terms. He sent over a cross which Chris Shuker
got his head to but he couldn't get any power on the ball and it was an
easy save by Oldham keeper Dean Brill.
With 20 minutes remaining, Les Parry threw on Gareth Edds and Charlie Barnett with John Welsh and Craig Curran being withdrawn.
With
two minutes left on the clock, a clever back-heel by Sordell released
Barnett down the left wing. The former Liverpool player cut the ball
back to Sordell who had two shots superbly parried by Brill who kept
his side in front.
The fourth official indicated five minutes of
stoppage time, but all Tranmere could muster in that period was a weak
header by Ash Taylor that was easily saved by Brill following a Shuker
corner kick, as Oldham held on to claim maximum points as they leap out
of the relegation zone.
Tranmere remain in 22nd with another
vitally important game against fellow strugglers Gillingham (who sit
just one place above the drop zone) this coming Tuesday at Priestfield.
Tranmere
(4-4-2): Daniels; Logan, Taylor, Goodison, Cresswell; Curran (Barnett
79), Welsh (Edds 71), McLaren, Shuker; Thomas-Moore, Gornell (Sordell
54). Unused subs: Collister, McCready, Broomes, Mahon.
