Aldershot 1-2 Tranmere |
8 December 2009 | Written by Paul Harper |
Tranmere booked their place in the third round of the FA Cup and set up a home tie against Wolves after a 2-1 victory over Aldershot in the 2nd round replay at the Recreation Ground.
Rovers were unchanged from the team that defeated Brentford 1-0 on Saturday and began the game well with chances falling to Gareth Edds and John Welsh who couldn't keep their long-range shots down.
Aldershot had a couple of half-chances of their own through Marvin Morgan and Anthony Straker before Tranmere opened the scoring just before half time.
Welsh played a quickly taken free-kick to Ian Thomas-Moore. The Rovers skipper attempted a cross which deflected back into his path and he sent a volley past Shots goalkeeper Mikhael Jaimez-Ruiz from a narrow angle to give Tranmere the lead going into the interval.
It wasn't long after the break before Rovers doubled their advantage. Thomas-Moore was involved again as he sent Shay Logan clear down the right. The on-loan Manchester City full back delivered a beautiful cross which was controlled by young striker Terry Gornell before he fired the ball home to make it 2-0.
The home side tried to get a goal back quickly but efforts by Chris Blackburn, Marlon Jackson and Oliver Bozanic failed to trouble Luke Daniels in the Tranmere goal.
They did finally get on the scoresheet in stoppage time when following an almighty goalmouth scramble, Bozanic turned the ball into the net for a consolation before the referee blew for full time.
Victory for Rovers means they will host Premier League side Wolves in the third round at Prenton Park on Saturday 2nd January.
